EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite rainy conditions, the Michigan State softball team (15-17, 1-2 Big Ten) posted a 2-1 win over Minnesota on Saturday, April 3, at Old College Field. The win over the Gophers marked the first Big Ten victory for the Spartans this season. Scoring the game-winning run was junior Lindsey Hansen who crossed home off a passed ball.
Looking for a seventh inning rally, the Gophers, with the bases loaded, was only able to bring across one run in the inning. Malisa Barnes knocked in the lone run with a single to score Dannie Skrove. With two outs and runners at every base, Sammie Howard grounded out to Hansen who tagged the runner attempting to advance from second to third, ending the game 2-1.
MSU used a two-run third inning to power past the Gophers. Junior Jessica Bracamonte got the scoring started for the Spartans when she grounded to second to score freshman Kylene Hopkins. Hansen scored the second run of the inning for the Green and White, bring the early lead to 2-0.
Limiting Minnesota to just six hits was sophomore pitcher Lauren Kramer (11-8). Kramer recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts while only walking one batter.
Taking the loss for the Gophers was Lacy Middlebrooks (15-11). Similar to Kramer, Middlebrooks went the distance in opening game of the series. Middlebrooks struck out six batters while only walking one.
The Spartans will battle Minnesota again on Sunday, April 4, to conclude the season series between the two teams. Action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Old College Field.
