Softball Edges Purdue
MSU extends its winning streak to six games after defeating the Boilermakers, 3-2.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State University softball defeated Purdue to improve its record to 20-13 overall and 6-0 in conference games. Junior Kelly Smith tallied seven strikeouts and sophomore Ellie Stoffer led the offense with two RBIs. It equals MSU’s best start in Big Ten play since 2006.
MSU took an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Alyssa McBride was the first to get on base with a single up the middle. Next, sophomore McKinzie Freimuth reached second on a throwing error by Purdue to advance McBride to third. Senior Kylene Hopkins singled to left field to send McBride home for the first run of the game. Stoffer hit a single up the middle for Freimuth and Hopkins to cross the plate.
Purdue (14-21, 2-5) scored two runs in the bottom of the third to narrow the deficit to only one run.
The final four innings went scoreless as MSU continued its undefeated record in the Big Ten.
Smith (15-7) pitched the complete game allowing only two runs, both earned. Smith's seven strikeouts moved her to seventh place in the record book with 161 strikeouts.
Hopkins and McBride went 3-for-4 at the plate.
The Spartans will continue their series against the Boilermakers Saturday, April 6, at 1 p.m. and conclude the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 7.
