EAST LANSING, Mich. - Wisconsin pitcher Andrea Kirchberg beat the Michigan State softball team for the second time in as many days as the Badgers defeated the Spartans, 2-1, Saturday afternoon (April 13) at Old College Field on the MSU campus. MSU falls to 20-23 (3-5 Big Ten) for the season, while the Badgers improve to 23-13 (6-4 BT).
Kirchberg (15-10) relieved Badger starting pitcher Katie Layne in the top of the first after the Spartans tagged Layne for two hits and a run. With one out in the inning, Sandy Lewis (Jr., Empire/Glen Lake) blasted a solo homer, her third of the year, over the right-field fence to give MSU the early 1-0 lead. The next three Spartans then reached base on an error, a hit and a walk before Kirchberg came in to end the scoring threat.
After the first, the Spartan offense could only muster three hits against Kirchberg and had two runners in scoring position the rest of the game.
Wisconsin scored its two runs in the bottom half of the first, quickly erasing the one-run deficit. The Badgers knocked MSU starting pitcher Jessica Beech (So., Okemos/Okemos) out of the game with two outs in the inning after Beech (8-6) allowed two runs on three hits. Becky Gray (Sr., Burr Oak/Burr Oak) came on in relief for the Spartans, going the rest of the way without surrendering a run and scattering four hits.
Michigan State returns to action tomorrow (Sunday, April 14) to face Minnesota for a doubleheader at Old College Field, beginning at noon.
