EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State softball suffered a 6-2 loss to Illinois in game one of the series on Friday evening. Junior Kelly Smith (16-12) pitched the complete game and tallied 11 strikeouts for the Spartans. Senior Jayme O’Bryant notched two RBIs for MSU.
The first three innings went scoreless for the Spartans and Fighting Illini (17-25, 7-11) before Illinois put one run on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Jess Perkins hit a home run for Illinois in the top of the sixth to score three runs. The Fighting Illini scored another two off of a double to take a 6-0 lead.
The Spartans (21-21, 7-7) responded in the bottom of the sixth with two runs. Sophomore Alyssa McBride reached first with a hit to right center and was sent home with a home run by O’Bryant.
Leading the offense was McBride going 2-for-3.
Picking up the win was Pepper Gay for Illinois as she improved her record to 9-15 on the season.
Michigan State continues its series with Illinois Saturday, April 27, at 1 p.m. at Secchia Stadium. The series will conclude on Sunday, April 28, at 1 p.m.
