EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State softball team concluded the 2009 season with a 2-1 win over eighth-ranked Michigan Saturday afternoon at Old College Field, snapping the Wolverines 21-game win streak. Freshman Lauren Kramer led the Spartans both offensively and in the circle, pitching a complete game for MSU and hitting a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
The win was the Spartans first against a ranked team this season and was the first time MSU beat Michigan in a regular-season contest since May 5, 2007.
Both teams remained scoreless through the first three innings, with Kramer recording a strikeout in each inning.
Michigan opened the fourth with Amanda Chidester recording a bunt single and Molly Bausher coming in to pinch run. Bausher then advanced to second on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt moved her to third. Maggie Viefhaus scored Bausher with a sacrifice fly to center for Michigan's lone run.
The Spartans responded in the bottom of the inning with leadoff batter Lindsey Hansen drawing a walk. After Michigan recorded the first out of the inning, Kramer hit a two-run shot to right center off the first pitch, putting the Spartans ahead 2-1.
Kramer continued her success in the circle in the fifth, striking out two and forcing the last Michigan batter to pop up. Neither team scored in the sixth and Kramer shut them down in the seventh inning for her 10th win of the season.
Kramer pitched her eighth complete game, striking out six and did not allow a walk.
MSU finishes the season with a 21-28 overall record and 5-14 mark in the Big Ten.
