East Lansing, Mich. - The Spartan softball team geared up to have its first official practice of the 2013 season on Sunday afternoon in the Duffy Daugherty Football Building.

"Practice went really well today," said head coach Jacquie Joseph. "We were over excited and I would rather be that than anything else. It was great to be out there starting the new year. There is a lot of anticipation for the season and I was just really pleased with the energy and the enthusiasm of the team for our first day."

Michigan State returns 13 letterwinners to the lineup including Kylene Hopkins, who earned Great Lakes All-Region Honors and was named First Team All-Big Ten for the 2012 season. Four newcomers join the team, three freshmen and one transfer, adding depth to the lineup at third base and pitcher.

The Spartans feature a non-conference schedule that includes five tournaments, highlighted by matchups against South Carolina (Feb. 9) and Arizona State (Feb. 15). MSU will also play 15 home games at Secchia Stadium. Michigan State will begin its season at the Stetson Tournament (Feb. 8-10) in DeLand, Fla., with opponents including South Carolina and Stetson. Opening Day at Secchia Stadium is set for Wednesday, March 20 vs. Western Michigan at 4 p.m.
