Women's Tennis Kicks off Season with Win
Jan. 18, 2012 EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team opened up its 2012 fall season with an impressive 7-0 win over Oakland University. Sophomore Katarina Lingl stood out at the No. 4 singles spot shutting out her opponent, Demi Georgakopoulos, 6-0, 6-0. "It was a good way to get our feet wet against Oakland," said assistant coach Tyler Faulkner. "It's always nice to play against other Michigan schools. It was a good match. I think we came out in doubles and started a little slow but then we picked it up and got a lot more aggressive. We finished strong and that carried over into singles play." Sophomore Olga Chernova topped her opponent, Karen Karoub, at the No. 2 singles position, 6-1, 6-0. At the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, the Spartans had to battle a little harder, but were able to come out on top. Sophomore Nicole Herzog registered a 6-3, 6-2, victory against Caitlin Young at the No. 1 position. Junior Michaela Silesova was able to notch a 6-0, 6-3 win over Grace Keating. The two MSU freshmen also tallied their first two wins in their dual-meet season debut. Julianne Gruber defeated Brittany Baxter at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-0 while Hilary Hager topped Caryn Kimmel, 6-1, 6-1. The Spartans claimed the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Herzog and Lingl dropped Young and Keating, 8-2. Silesova and Gruber also won 8-2 over Karoub and Georgakopoulos. Redshirt junior Dana Guentert and sophomore Jennifer Yen paired up to top Baxter and Kimmel, 8-5.
The Spartans are back in action on Sunday, January 22nd, when they host Akron at noon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Results Singles Doubles |
