Women's Tennis Earn Two Wins in Doubleheader

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season after defeating Cleveland State and Detroit each by the same margin, 6-1, in its first doubleheader of the season on Sunday, Jan. 24, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. Freshman Nicole Herzog (Manillia, Brazil), sophomore Elena Ivanova (Moscow, Russia), senior Christine Milliken (Traverse City, Mich.) and junior Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.) all picked up wins in both singles and doubles action for the Green and White.
The Spartans began their first match of the day by sweeping Cleveland State in doubles action. At the No. 1 spot, Herzog and junior Manon Noe (Liancourt, France) defeated Bjerrehus and Gibbons of CSU, 8-5. Wilson teamed with freshman Amy Barton (Brisbane, Australia) to defeat Janek and Drake, 8-6. Ivanova and Milliken earned a win for the Green and White over Lazaris and Muntean, 8-2, at the No. 3 position.
Singles action also saw success from the Spartans as they won five of six contests. Herzog took on Bjerrehus at the No. 1 position and came out with the win after a three-set match, 5-7, 6-1, 10-8. Freshman Michaela Silesova (Topolcany, Slovakia) topped Larariz, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 slot, while Wilson swept Janek at the No. 3 position, 6-0, 6-0. Ivanova also defeated her CSU opponent in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Ashley Stockwell (Okemos, Mich.) picked up the win for the Spartans at the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 7-6(4).
Once again, MSU picked up all three doubles matches to attain the first point of the match against Detroit. At No. 1 doubles, Herzog and Noe defeated Espinosa and Cornwell, 8-3. Wilson and Barton fought through a tough match, but came out with the win over Flankova and Baca, 8-7(5), at the No. 2 spot, while Ivanova and Milliken posted a victory over Capuano and Weldon at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
In similar fashion to the match against CSU, MSU earned five of the six singles matches. Herzog topped Espinosa at the No. 1 position, 6-2, 7-5, while Silesova defeated Flankova at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-0. Ivanova posted a win over Weldon, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, sophomore Dana Guentert (Lilburn, Ga.) defeated Capuano at the No. 5 position, 7-5, 6-3, and Milliken beat Baca at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-3.
MSU will hit the road for the first time this season as it travels to Orlando, Fla. to take on UCF on January 29, at 4 p.m. and then Florida Atlantic on January 31, at 10 a.m.
