ATHENS, Ga. - The Michigan State women’s tennis team bounced back on Saturday afternoon by defeating Furman, 4-0, in the consolation round of ITA Kick-Off Weekend held at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Complex in Athens, Georgia. The Spartans improve to 5-1 on the season.

“We were a team that was tough to beat today. We came out aggressive and scrappy in doubles and carried that into our singles play,” said Michigan State head coach Kim Bruno. “This was the best performance of the season from our Spartan women.”

MSU secured the doubles point, as they have in all five victories this season, to lead the match 1-0 going into singles play. The duo of juniors Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen kicked off the match on a high note by defeating Furman’s Katarina Kozarov and Aryn Greene, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles. The doubles point was clinched on court two when senior Habiba Shaker and freshman Sara Kuuttila downed Katty Weymouth and Danni Vines, 6-3.

Metcalf and Nguyen improved their record to 7-4 overall at first doubles, while Shaker increased her team-high doubles wins to 10.

After jumping to the lead early, MSU’s momentum carried over to singles competition with the Spartans securing straight-set victories on courts two, three and four to clinch the match. Shaker, Kuuttila and Metcalf all had dominating wins over Furman to close out ITA Kick-Off Weekend. At No. 2 singles, Shaker downed Weymouth, 6-2, 6-2. Kuuttila also defeated Vines, 6-2, 6-1 on court three. The match was clinched at No. 4 singles when Metcalf defeated Greene, 6-3, 6-3.

The Spartans return home next weekend for two matches before starting a seven-match road swing. MSU will welcome Utah State on Friday, Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. and Akron on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. Both matches will take place at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
