Feb. 15, 2004
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Michigan State women's tennis team picked up its second win this weekend with a 5-2 victory over Ball State. The Cardinals had been undefeated at 3-0 until their matchup with the Spartans. Michigan State improved to 4-4. "We set out to be 2-0 this weekend," said head coach Tim Bauer. "We are pleased with the performance that we had." Once again the Spartans picked up the doubles point, winning all three matches. Senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) and junior Keri Thompson (Clarke Lake, Mich.) defeated Melissa Roach and Katie Owens, 8-3, at No. 1. Sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and freshman Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) beat Jill Wieman and Jessica Thompson, 8-6, at No. 2. The freshman team of Pascale Schnitzer (Santiago, Chile) and Jessica Baron (Miami, Fla.) overpowered Jenny Batty and Susan Kelley, 8-3, at No. 3. "I think our doubles was intimidating to them and that helped get us off to a really good start," said Bauer. At the No. 1 singles position, Roach defeated Thompson, 6-2, 6-1, but at the No. 2 position, Lay defeated Batty 3-6, 7-5, 6-0. The No. 3 match saw Brady beat Wieman 6-2, 6-0. At the No. 4 position, Owens defeated Andrews, 2-6, 6-1,6-4. Clinching a Spartan victory in the No. 5 match, Schnitzer beat Jessica Thompson, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. "Pascale had a big comeback that really helped us," said Bauer. "Under the pressure of clinching that last match, we couldn't ask for more than that."
Baron also picked up a win over Kelley at the No. 6 position, 6-1, 6-1, to complete an MSU victory 5-2.
This weekend was the first two of five consecutive road matches for the women's tennis team. The Spartans next match will be vs. Florida International on March 6 in Tallahassee, Fla.
