Women's Tennis Tops Toledo, 5-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Toledo in a non-conference match by a score of 5-2, today (Feb. 27) at home. With the win, the Spartans are now 8-2 on the season and 0-1 in Big Ten play. "We fought hard to win this match," said head coach Simone Jardim. "Toledo was fighting as well. It was a good match. We have to move forward and we have been taking it one match at a time." In a hard fought doubles match, No. 60 sophomore Amy Barton and freshman Marina Bohrer notched their eighth doubles victory when they defeated Polina Guimaraes and Ashley Frey, 8-6. Sophomore Nicole Herzog and senior Whitney Wilson also battled through a tough match against Kelsey Anonsen and Alex Cristello, prevailing 8-6. Sophomore Michaela Silesova and freshman Katarina Lingl fell to Amanda Border, 8-6. In singles action, Barton downed Guimaraes, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6. At the No. 2 singles position, freshman Valentina Rusakova dropped Frey, 6-0, 6-3. Bohrer blanked Border, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 3 spot. Sophomore Dana Guentert fell to Anonsen, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (5). Silesova tallied a victory over Cristello, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Lingl suffered a loss to Coffman, 6-3, 6-4. The Spartans will travel to Bradenton, Fla., to face Missouri on March 8th at 10 a.m. They will then square off against William & Mary on March 9th at 10 a.m. Results Michigan State 5, Toledo 2 Singles
