Women’s Tennis Defeats Rutgers, 6-1
MSU is back on track after picking up a 6-1 win to close out the weekend and improve to 15-5.
Piscataway, N.J. - The Michigan State women’s tennis team wrapped up its weekend on the road with a 6-1 victory over Rutgers to improve to 15-5 on the season and 5-2 in Big Ten play. Rutgers falls to 6-11 on the season and 1-6 in conference play.
The No. 72 doubles pairing in the nation got the Spartans started off with a 6-1 victory at first doubles, before Aslina Chua and Lexi Baylis secured the doubles point for MSU by winning 6-2 on court three. Metcalf and Nguyen are now 12-4 in doubles and extended their impressive winning streak by picking up their sixth-straight victory.
Michigan State kept rolling as the match moved into singles play, where five different Spartans picked up wins. Metcalf and Athena Trouillot each improved their team-high winning streaks to five matches with wins in straight sets at third and fifth singles, respectively. After battling to a 7-5 win in the first set, Metcalf cruised to a 6-0 win in the second set and is now an impressive 15-3 in singles play on the season.
Senior Erin Faulkner continued her dominance in Big-Ten play with a decisive 6-0, 6-1 victory at court two. Nguyen won her match at court four, 6-2, 7-6. Trouillot, Metcalf, Nguyen and Faulkner are now all 5-1 on the season in conference play, showing the depth of talent MSU has that has resulted in the 5-2 start in the Big Ten.
Lexi Baylis picked up her 12th singles win of the season at court six. Baylis dropped the first set, but then battled back for a 6-4 second-set win that set up the third-set tiebreaker, where she came away with a dominant 10-2 performance.
Michigan State returns home next weekend to welcome Big Ten opponents Nebraska and Iowa. MSU will host Nebraska on Saturday, April 15 and will then face Iowa on Sunday, April 16. Both matches are set to begin at 12 p.m.
