Women's Tennis Eliminated From Big Ten Championships by Illinois, 4-0

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team had its postseason cut short when it was downed by Illinois, 4-0, in the first round of the Big Ten Championship on Thursday, April 28 in Ann Arbor, Mich. With the loss, the Spartans conclude their 2011 season with a 12-12 record overall, and 1-9 in conference play.
In doubles play, No. 39 Rachael White and Allison Falkin dropped No. 40 sophomore Amy Barton and freshman Marina Bohrer, 8-6, at the No. 1 position. Sophomore Nicole Herzog and Senior Whitney Wilson were defeated, 8-1, by Annie McCarthy and Breanne Smutko at the No. 2 position. Sophomore Michaela Silesova and freshman Valentina Rusakova were edging Amy Allin and Chelcie Abaijan, 7-6, before the match was left unfinished due to Illinois already winning the doubles point.
The Fighting Illini swept the Spartans in the singles matches. At the No. 2 spot, Allin topped Rusakova, 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Dana Guentert was defeated by McCarthy, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 5 position while Leigh Finnegan handed Silesova a 7-5, 6-1 loss.
Illinois was also leading the Spartans in the matches that were left unfinished. No. 105 White won the first set, 6-3, over Barton, but MSU was up one point, 5-4, in the second. Bohrer was down 1-0 to Smutko in the beginning of their match. Falkin had a 4-1 lead over Herzog at the No. 4 spot.
