Women's Tennis Concludes First Day of Spartan Invite

The Michigan State women's tennis team finished day one of the Spartan Invitational on Friday, Sept. 25, at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Green and White advanced three to further action in singles play.
The Spartans came out strong in doubles play advancing two teams into the second round. The tandem of freshman Nicole Herzog (Minilia, Brazil) and sophomore Dana Guentert (Lilburn, Ga.) shut out the team of Bjerrehus and Lazaris of Cleveland State, 8-0. Freshman Amy Barton (Brisbane, Australia) and junior Whitney Wilson (Evansville, Ind.) teamed together to outlast Pantusart and Castro of Akron, 9-8(2).
Ivanova, Guentert, Wilson and Barton also posted wins in the first round of singles action. In the White Draw, Ivanova defeated Brien of IPFW in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-2, while Guentert posted a win over Larson of Miami of Ohio, 6-4, 7-5. Wilson finished round one of the White Draw for the Spartans, defeating Ducro of Xavier, 6-3, 6-1.
Ivanova continued to represent MSU well after posting a win over Zinn of Xavier, 6-4, 6-1, continuing in singles action tomorrow.
Barton was a staple for the Spartans in the Red Draw, advancing to further action after picking up wins in rounds one and two. After topping Bjerrehus of Cleveland State in the first round, 6-2, 7-5, Barton would post another win over Miller of Louisville in the second round, 6-2, 6-4.
It was an overall productive day for us," said assistant coach Shelley Godwin. "It was a great opportunity to play matches and identify things we still need to work on, in addition to things that we are doing well."
MSU continues play tomorrow, Saturday Sept. 25, at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts with doubles play beginning at 9 a.m.
