EAST LANSING, Mich. - - The Michigan State women's tennis team completed day one of the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational held at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts by picking up 11 wins. They notched eight singles victories to go along with three doubles wins. Play will resume tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. at the outdoor courts.
Freshman Athena Trouillot lead the way for the Spartans as she went 3-0 on the day, tallying two singles victories and a doubles win. Competing in Draw B for singles, Trouillot defeated Marcy Huck of IPFW 6-2, 6-0, in the first round. In the second round, she took down Mathilde Orange of Cleveland State 6-2, 6-1. She will face Anastasia Tripolskaya from Wisconsin in the semifinals tomorrow. Trouillot also teamed with fellow freshman Erin Faulkner to grab an 8-5 victory over Lauren Chypyha and Sydney Rider of Wisconsin in Draw A doubles.
Senior Olga Chernova put together two quality wins in Draw A singles and will meet up with Lauren Chypyha of Wisconsin in the semifinals tomorrow. Chernova defeated Princess Gbadamosi of Cleveland State 6-4, 6-2, in round one and came back to beat Pia Rygh of Toledo in round two, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Also competing in Draw A singles, Erin Faulkner notched two wins as well and finds herself in the semifinals, matching up with Olga Shkundina of Akron tomorrow. The freshman cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win in round one over Kathryn Sharples of Illinois-Chicago and then won 6-3, 6-4 over Katelyn Nguyen of Toledo in round two.
Competing in Draw C singles, freshman Emmy Virkus notched two wins, beating Bianca Avram of Toledo 3-6, 6-2, 6-0, and beating Veronica Lacerda of Illinois-Chicago 6-3, 6-2.
