EAST LANSING, Mich. - - The Michigan State women's tennis team rounded out the third and final day of the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational on Sunday. MSU was victorious in three matches on the day. The tournament concluded inside the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility due to weather.
In Draw A singles, MSU was able to place three in the top-eight. Sophomore Emily Meyers took the seventh spot after defeating Pia Rygh of Toledo 6-2, 6-1. Senior Olga Chernova placed fourth after falling to Olga Shkundina of Akron in the consolation match. Freshman Erin Faulkner lost in the championship match to Lauren Chypyha of Wisconsin 6-2, 7-5, and took second.
"For our first weekend, for our first tournament, there were a lot of good things from it," head coach Simone Jardim said. "It's good to see where we are and where we need to be. It's a good measurement."
Freshman Athena Trouillot won third place in Draw B singles. She defeated Kayleigh Hall of Toledo in the consolation match, 6-4, 6-0. Another freshman, Emmy Virkus, finished the weekend 2-2 in the round-robin play of Draw C singles.
"They competed and all did a good job," Jardim said of the freshman. "They are really going to bring something to the team in one way or another."
MSU's season will continue Oct. 10 with the ITA Midwest Regional Championship. Selected Spartans will compete in the tournament.
MSU will also host the Green and White Invitational Oct. 26-27
Bohrer ousted in ITA All-American Championship
Senior Marina Bohrer, who was selected to the prequalifying bracket of the ITA All-American Championships held in Pacific Palisades, Calif., lost her match late Saturday afternoon. She fell to Kanika Vaidya of Columbia 7-5, 6-2.
