Spartans Conclude Play at Wildcat Invite
Freshmen have strong performance at first fall tournament.

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Michigan State women’s tennis team wrapped up competition at the Wildcat Invite in Evanston, Illinois, Sunday. The Spartans began the opening weekend of the season with a 10-4 record in singles play and posted a 6-5 record in doubles play for the tournament.
On the opening day of the tournament, the Spartans proved strong in doubles play after going 6-0 through the first and second rounds. MSU had four Spartans claim victories in the first round of singles.
“I think the team had a strong start to our fall season," said head coach Kim Bruno. "I saw us playing points on our terms and staying competitive in every match. We have a tough bunch of women.”
Freshman Ava Thielman partnered with senior Aslina Chua, while freshman Sara Kuuttila paired with senior Habiba Shaker. Both pairs went 2-1 on the weekend. Freshman Caroline Szabo and sophomore Julia Fenn went 3-0 in the doubles round robin, with victories over duos from Lewis University, Chicago State and UIC.
Sophomore Samantha Memije partnered with senior Lexi Baylis to defeat DePaul’s Avgeri and Kuzmenkova 6-1 and Kostyuk and Shepherd of Chicago State 6-4 before falling to Northwestern’s Ogut and Byrne in the third round of doubles play. Memije dropped her first singles match of the tournament, but bounced back to defeat Michigan’s Bella Lorenzini in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Three Spartans had a record of 2-1 in singles play, which contributed to the ten singles victories over the weekend. Chua and Baylis each earned two victories for the Spartans in singles play, before falling to Nandini Das of Florida State and Notre Dame’s Rachel Chong, respectively.
MSU was led by freshmen Thielman and Kuuttila, who appeared in their first matches for the Green and White. Thielman went 3-0 in singles over the weekend after defeating Andrea Amortegui of Marquette 7-5, 6-2 and Lenka Antonijevic of Depaul 6-2, 6-1. She then downed Pittsburgh’s Callie Frey in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon 7-5, 2-6, 7-6.
Kuuttila defeated Northwestern’s Julie Byrne 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round. After falling to Notre Dame’s Allie Miller, she battled back from behind to defeat Sedi Jacobs of Kentucky 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 in a deciding third set.
“Our freshmen showed off this weekend by showing us they have serious game,” added Bruno. “Ava won her flight and Sara went an impressive 2-1. Our future is bright.”
Next up on the fall schedule for the Spartans are the ITA Regionals, which will take place in Ann Arbor, Mich. from Thursday, Oct. 12 to Tuesday, Oct. 17.
