Metcalf and Nguyen Complete Play at ITA All-Americans
The duo will return to the court next week at ITA Regionals.
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Michigan State women’s tennis team was represented by juniors Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen at the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Americans on Thursday and Friday.
The duo is currently ranked No. 14 in the ITA Preseason Doubles Rankings, which is the highest preseason ranking in school history.
Due to their impressive rank, they were automatically nominated for the main draw of the tournament, foregoing the pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds.
“We knew coming in here that there wasn’t going to be an easy match. You’ve got to play great tennis from the first point, to the last point,” head coach Kim Bruno said. “I thought we did a decent job of that the first day, we just didn’t take care of all of our opportunities. I don’t think we did a great job of that today at all.”
On Thursday, Oct. 5, Metcalf and Nguyen fell to No. 17 Fernanda Contreras and Emily Smith of Vanderbilt, 8-4, in the opening round of the main draw.
The duo then played in the main draw consolation on Friday morning, where they fell to No. 34 Morgan Coppac and Elena Christofi of the University of Georgia, 8-1.
“I think they’re a great team; I still believe in what they can do. I believe in their potential and I expect better results of being able to beat teams that are at this caliber," Bruno said. “Not just getting close and losing the big points, let’s take care of those opportunities that are presented to us.”
Next up for the Spartans is the ITA Regionals, which will take place from Thursday, Oct. 12 to Tuesday, Oct. 19 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Eight Spartans will represent MSU at the ITA Regionals, including senior Lexi Baylis, sophomore Samantha Memije and freshman Ava Thielman in the qualifying round. Seniors Habiba Shaker and Aslina Chua, and freshman Sara Kuuttila, as well as Metcalf and Nguyen, will also represent the Green and White in the main draw.
The qualifying round will begin on Thursday, Oct. 12, with the main draw doubles following on Friday, Oct. 13 and main draw singles on Saturday, Oct. 14.
