Women's Tennis Gains Momentum in Tournaments

Jennifer Yen picked up a win in doubles with Myers.

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis picked up four wins in day one of the Second Chance Tournament. MSU finished day two of ITA Midwest Regionals and learned its placements for tomorrow in the Main Singles Draw.

The Spartans struggled in the Second Chance Tournament as Michaela Silesova lost against Karyn Emeralda from Cleveland State, 6-4, 6-3, in the Singles Alpha Draw. After their byes in the Singles Bravo and Singles Charlie Draws, Jennifer Yen and Emily Meyers advanced into the second round. Nicole Herzog downed Jessica Theobolot from Western Illinois, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles at the Second Chance Tournament, Herzog and Silesova defeated Milwaukee's Kristin Kuer and Brittany Skemp, 8-0 and Northern Illinois' Haley Dekkinga and Cristina Alvarez, 8-4 in the second round. Yen and Meyers picked up a win against Ese Davis and Morgan Woodfill, 8-0, before falling to Mary Malkin and Stephanie McDonald from NIU, 8-6.

Tomorrow, Spartans will continue their singles draws in the Second Chance Tournament as Silesvosa will face Davis, Yen will have a match against Alvarez, Meyers will play Caroline Aleck of Western Michigan, and Herzog will see action against Vivine Noel of CSU. In the doubles draw Silesova and Herzog will team up to face Western Michigan's Kathleen Hawkins and Caroline Aleck in the championship round. Yen and Meyers will compete in the consolation round against Maria Rozo and Ilse Pacheo of NIU.

Today in the ITA Midwest Regionals Doubles Draw, Julianne Gruber and Katarina Lingl lost against Sephora Boulbahaim and Merritt Whitley from Eatern Illinois, 8-6.  Marina Bohrer and Catherine Parenteau saw action against Prang Pantusart and Angelina Jogasuria from Akron as they fell in the first round, 9-7.



On Thursday, Olga Chernova also competed in an optional consolation round where she defeated Chelsea Bailey of UWM, 6-0, 6-1. 

In the Main Singles Draw tomorrow, Bohrer will face Pantusart of Akron, her opponent in the doubles draw, and Parenteau will face Molly O'Koniewski of Notre Dame.
