EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team wrapped up its first day as hosts of the Green and White Invite and after one round of doubles and singles play, the Spartans tallied two doubles victories and four singles wins. The tournament returns for Day 2, tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Courts.
In Draw A Doubles action, junior Nicole Herzog and sophomore Katarina Lingl dropped Strakhove and Halabi of Detroit-Mercy, 8-3. Sophomore Valentina Rusakova and junior Michaela Silesova were topped by Eastern Michigan's Toncheva and de'Lisle-Tarr, 8-5.
The tandem of freshman Julianne Gruber and sophomore Olga Chernova edged Hebble and Rang of Ball State, 9-8 (4) in a tight match. And in Draw C Doubles action, the pairing of freshman Hilary Hager and sophomore Jennifer Yen fell to Bowling Green's Eccleston and Johnson, 8-4.
In Draw A Singles play, Rusakova notched a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Chiricosta of Bowling Green while Chernova lost in three sets to Mebuke of Eastern Michigan with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-0 score.
Two Spartans picked up wins in the Draw B Singles, as Herzog edged Sanders of Ball State, 7-5, 6-2, marking her second victory of the day as she also notched an earlier win in doubles play. In the same bracket, Lingl also topped Rang of Ball State, 6-2, 6-2.
In Draw C Singles Reuland of Bowling Green defeated Silesova, 7-5, 6-0. Gruber also fell in her opening match after battling Bhatia of Eastern Michgan in a three-set 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4) loss. Yen fell to Boulieris of Ball state, 6-3, 6-3 in her Draw D Singles match.
Redshirt junior Dana Guentert received a bye in the first round of Draw E Singles, but Hager was victorious in her match over Fernades, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
