EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State tennis team continues its preseason play when it hosts Akron Friday, Jan. 28th. The match takes place at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility and is slated to begin at 3 p.m. Last weekend, the Spartans kicked off their spring season with two perfect 7-0 wins over IPFW and Detroit.

Scouting the Spartans
Sophomore Amy Barton posted a singles victory over Amy Recht of IPFW, 6-4, 6-3, this past weekend. She also partnered with freshman Marina Bohrer to defeat Recht and Ballus, 9-7, and Cornwell and Salas of Detroit, 8-3, in doubles action. Bohrer earned two singles wins after topping Raques Vescovi of IPFW, 6-4, 7-6, and Amanda Cornwell of Detroit, 6-7, 7-6 (3).

Freshman Valentina Rusakova recorded two singles victories against Ingrid Ballus of IPFW, 6-1, 6-4, and Carolina Salas, 6-2, 6-2, of Detroit. Against IPFW, Rusakova partnered with Wilson to defeat Forsyth and Kiefer, 8-1. Rusakova then downed Halabi and Strakhova of Detroit, 8-2, alongside partner freshman Katarina Lingl. Wilson completed the dual match with two singles wins over Catarina Kiefer, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, and Eleana Strakohova, 4-6, 6-2, 10-1. Lingl also tallied two singles victories over Forsyth, 6-3. 6-2, of IPFW and Detroit's Julisa Fernades, 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles action, Lingl and sophomore Nicole Herzog defeated Kobayashi and Vescovi, 8-7 (4). Herzog also posted a doubles win alongside sophomore Dana Guentert when they won in a match against Fernandes and Weldon, 8-2. Guentert downed Yuak Kobayash of IPFW, 6-1, 6-1, and Raina Halabi, 6-0, 6-1, of Detroit. Freshman Jennifer Yen recorded a singles win over Erin Weldon of Detroit, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9.

 

 

Looking at Akron
Akron comes to Michigan State off of a 5-2 win over Penn State. Angelina Jogasuri, Angelika Jogasuria, Prant Pantusart, and Anna Baronyate all earned singles wins for Akron on the road. The Zips captured two doubles victories en route to their season opening win. No. 26 Zara Harutyunvan and partner Angelina Jogasuria recorded an 8-4 victory and Pran Pantusart and Angelika Jogasuira topped their opponent, 8-5.

The Spartans will welcome Bowling Green to East Lansing, Mich., on Friday, Feb 4. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
