Women’s Tennis Travels to Florida for Spring Break Trip
MSU will start the week at USF on Wednesday, March 7 at 12 p.m.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women’s tennis team continues its seven-match road swing this week as they travel to Florida for three matches. MSU will travel to the University of South Florida on Wednesday, March 7, with the match set to begin at 12 p.m. They will then take on Florida Gulf Coast on March 9 at 1 p.m. and No. 38 Florida International on March 10 at 12 p.m. to close out the week of play.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to not only get in our outdoor season but to compete against tough Florida teams,” head coach Kim Bruno said. “We’re hoping to be able to take care of our opportunities when they’re presented to us.”
Last time out, the Spartans swept DePaul, 7-0, as every Spartan won their match. The team improved to 8-2 on the season.
MSU leads the all-time series with USF, 1-0, while they tie with Florida International, 5-5. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Spartans and FGCU.
Michigan State is 18-5 in doubles play in duals, as they have secured the doubles point in all eight victories this season. The duo of juniors Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen remain undefeated at No. 1 doubles, as they improved to 7-0 last time out.
Senior Habiba Shaker has a team-high 12 doubles wins and five Spartans hold a record with ten or more wins.
MSU is 34-8 in singles play this season, led by freshman Sara Kuuttila who has a team-high 11 singles wins this year. Three Spartans will look to break into double-digit singles wins this week, as Nguyen, sophomore Samantha Memije and senior Aslina Chua all sit at nine wins.
“We just have to stay hungry and ready because each time we step out there could really either help us or hurt us in a way. I think the girls have to know that and they have to be ready,” Bruno said. “They’ve done nothing but prove themselves so we just can’t settle and we have to make sure we’re ready to go for each match over spring break.”
The Spartans begin Big Ten play next weekend with road matchups at Nebraska and Iowa to close out their seven-match road swing. MSU will take on Nebraska on Friday, March 16, with the match set to begin at 6 p.m. EST. They will then travel to Iowa on Sunday, March 18, with the match set to begin at 11 a.m. EST.
