EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women’s tennis team returns home this weekend to welcome Big Ten opponents Nebraska and Iowa. MSU will face the Cornhuskers on Saturday, April 15 and will host the Hawkeyes on Sunday, April 16. Both matches are set to begin at 12 p.m., with Sunday featuring a double dip of Spartan tennis, with the men’s team taking on Illinois at the same time. All matches are scheduled to take place at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Facility, weather permitting.
The Spartans are coming off of a pair of road Big Ten matches, defeating Rutgers 6-1 and falling to Maryland. MSU enters the weekend 15-5 on the season and owns a 5-2 record in conference play to rank fourth in the Big Ten.
As a team, MSU improved to 101-62 in singles play with Emily Metcalf and Athena Trouillot bringing team-high five-match winning streaks into the weekend. Trouillot leads the team with 19 singles wins on the year, followed by Davina Nguyen with 18 and Aslina Chua with 17. Trouillot, Metcalf, Nguyen and Faulkner all pace the Spartans in conference play with a 5-1 mark in the Big Ten.
Michigan State has a record of 44-33 in doubles play, led by the duo of Metcalf and Nguyen who improved to 12-4 last weekend and picked up their sixth consecutive victory. Samantha Memije and Trouillot have a team-high 14 wins as a doubles pair.
The Spartans own a series lead of 3-2 all-time in matches against Nebraska and are 15-29 all-time against Iowa. Nebraska comes into the weekend with an 18-4 record, including a 5-3 in the Big Ten, while Iowa is 15-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Michigan State concludes the 2017 regular season next weekend as they host Illinois in the last home match of the season on Friday, April 21, with the match set to begin at 4 p.m. MSU will then travel to Evanston, Ill. to face Northwestern on Sunday, April 23 to conclude the regular season, with the match set to begin at 2 p.m.
