EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State women's tennis team concludes the 2017 regular season this weekend as they host Illinois in the last home match of the season for Senior Day on Friday, April 21, with the match set to begin at 4 p.m. MSU will then travel to Evanston, Ill. on Sunday, April 23, to face No. 36 Northwestern in conclusion of the regular season, with the match set to begin at 2 p.m.
The Spartans will honor seniors Erin Faulkner and Athena Trouillot before the match. Faulkner has 61 career singles wins, while her 54 career doubles victories is tied for the eighth most in school history, and her 115 wins overall also ranks eighth. Trouillot is the school record holder for most career singles wins (89) and most overall wins (154). She needs two more wins in doubles to become the winningest doubles player in school history.
Michigan State is coming off of a successful weekend, defeating Nebraska 4-0 and downing Iowa 5-2. MSU improved to 17-5 on the season and 7-2 against Big Ten opponents. The Spartans have won seven of their last eight matches and have an impressive 10-1 record at home.
As a team, MSU is 109-63 in singles play. Davina Nguyen, Erin Faulkner and Athena Trouillot all improved to 7-1 in Big Ten play with their wins last weekend. Nguyen earned her 20th win over the weekend, becoming the second Spartan to earn 20 wins this year, joining Trouillot with a team-best 21 wins. Trouillot has also won a team-high seven consecutive matches.
In doubles play, the duo of Trouillot and Samantha Memije earned their team-best 15th victory of the year over the weekend. Emily Metcalf and Nguyen improved to 13-4 on the season and are 7-1 at first doubles, where they have won seven straight matches and appear in this week's ITA Doubles rankings at No. 75.
The Spartans are 11-32 in all-time matches against Illinois while they are 1-39 against Northwestern all-time. Illinois is 12-11 on the season and 6-3 in the Big Ten. Northwestern is 12-9 on the season and 8-1 in conference play.
Michigan State will travel to Champaign, Ill. for the Big Ten Championships next weekend. The Big Ten Championships will begin on Thursday, April 27 and conclude on Sunday, April 30.
