Women's Tennis Set For Big Ten Tournament

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The No. 6-seed Michigan State women’s tennis team opens the postseason in the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament against No.3-seed Northwestern on Friday, April 28, with the match set to begin at 3 p.m. ET. MSU finished the regular season 17-7 and tied for fourth in the Big Ten and earned the six seed after tiebreakers. With one more win, it would be the most wins in school history since 1991 when the team went 18-8. MSU last won 17 matches in a season in 2014 when the team went 17-9.
Michigan State went 7-4 in conference play this season and its fourth-place finish in the Big Ten was its best since 1988. The seven Big Ten wins are the most since 1991 when the team went 7-6.
The Spartans get a chance for payback on the Wildcats, as MSU just fell to No. 36 in the nation Northwestern last weekend on the road, falling 4-3, as the match came down to the final court. Northwestern finished the season 13-10 overall, with a 9-2 record in the conference.
Sophomores Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen are currently ranked as the 40th doubles pair in the nation, the highest ITA ranking in school history. The duo is 14-4 overall and 8-1 in conference play and have won eight straight matches. They defeated the No. 16 doubles pair in the nation against Northwestern last Sunday.
Four different Spartans finished the regular season with seven or more wins in Big Ten singles matches. Nguyen leads the team with an 8-2 Big Ten record, while Erin Faulkner and Metcalf followed with a 7-2 record in conference play, while senior Athena Trouillot finished with a 7-3 record.
Last season, MSU defeated Indiana to reach the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament, claiming their first win in the tournament since 1993. The Spartans then fell to No.2-seed Northwestern in the quarterfinals.
The winner of this match will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, April 29 at 3 p.m., with the championship match taking place on Sunday, April 30 at 1 p.m.
