EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis program has announced the signing of two recruits to National Letters of Intent. Joining the Spartans in the fall of 2009 will be Nicole Herzog (Manilia, Brazil/Colegio Libere Vivere de Ensino Basico) and Amy Barton (Brisbane, Australia/St. Margaret's Anglican Girls' School). This marks the first recruiting class for head coach Simone Jardim.

Nicole Herzog: Manilia, Brazil (Colegio Libere Vivere de Ensino Basico)
High School:
Earned a career-high International Tennis Federation (ITF) combined ranking of 257 ... Earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Enrique Aguilar to advance to the quarterfinals of the 29th Argentina Cup ... Defeated Gabriela Vieira at the XXVI Bahia Open - Porto Seguro, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the finals ... Partnered with Fernanda Faria to defeat Natalia Cheng and Gabriela Vieira, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6, in the finals of the XXVI Bahia Open - Porto Seguro ... Defeated Claudine Paulson at the 27th Asuncion Bowl 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals ... Teamed with Aleksandrina Naydenova to defeat Fabiana Mersan and Maria Victoria Puga, 6-4, 6-2, at the 29th Argentina Cup.

Coach Jardim on Herzog: "Nicole brings with her a great deal of experience since she has played in a variety of international junior tournaments. She has had success throughout her junior career and I am excited to see how she transitions into a collegiate player."

Amy Barton: Brisbane, Australia (St. Margaret's Anglican Girls' School)
High School:
Earned a career-high ITF combined ranking of 1,107 ... Concluded her career at St. Margaret's Anglican Girls' School with an unblemished record, going 9-0 her senior year ... Led St. Margaret's to a Queensland Girls' Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA) crown her senior year and an undefeated record of 9-0 ... Defeated current Spartan Elena Ivanova, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16 at Northern Territory ITF ... Defeated Erin Billett, 6-4, 6-0, in the semifinals of the 2008 Gympie RSL Open Events ... Partnered with Taylor Douglas to defeat Charlotte Fuller and Kristy Sinclair at the 2008 Gympie RSL Open Events, 8-3.

 

 

Coach Jardim on Barton: "Amy is experienced and should be able to help the team right away in the fall. She comes from Australia, where many great doubles players come from, and I look forward to seeing what she can do as a Spartan."
