EAST LANSING, Mich. – The duo of juniors Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen are ranked No. 14 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Preseason National Doubles Rankings, announced on Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Michigan State is one of three Big Ten schools represented in the top 15 of the rankings. Northwestern’s Maddie Lipp and Alex Chatt come in at No. 5, while the University of Michigan’s Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian lead the way at No. 1.
Metcalf and Nguyen ended the 2016-17 season with an overall record of 14-5, and a team-high eight conference wins. The duo also posted a record of 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Last season, the pair was ranked 40th in the nation in doubles, which was the highest in season ITA ranking in school history.
In singles play, Metcalf and Nguyen both led the team in 2017 with conference records of 7-2 and 8-2, respectively.
The Michigan State women’s tennis team finished the 2016-17 season 17-7 and tied for fourth in the Big Ten. MSU went 7-4 in conference play, with their seven wins being the most since 1991 when the team went 7-6.
The Spartans will kick off the 2017-18 fall season at the Northwestern Invite Sept. 29-Oct. 1, followed by the ITA All-Americans Oct. 1-9.
