EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team opens its 2010 season with the 21st annual Spartan Invitational Friday-Sunday, Sept. 24-26. Pending weather, Friday's action will be held at both the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts and the Fee Tennis Courts located on the east side of campus. Due to the MSU football game, Saturday's competition is slated to be contested at the Fee Tennis Courts and Okemos High School. On Sunday, the invitational is slated to return to the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts as well as Fee Tennis Courts. Action is set to begin at 9 a.m. each day.

Aside from MSU, teams competing are Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, California University of Pennsylvania, Chicago State, Cleveland State, Detroit, Eastern Michigan, IPFW, Louisville, Marquette and Toledo. The invitational will be contested in a compass draw, non-elimination format.

The tournament marks the beginning of head coach Simone Jardim's third season with the Michigan State women's tennis team. Jardim is assisted by Shelley Godwin who is entering her second season with the Spartans. MSU returns eight letterwinners from the 2009-10 campaign.

The Spartans return with only one senior and one junior. Whitney Wilson is the lone senior for MSU and complied a singles record of 12-10 and a doubles record of 12-12 last season. Wilson finished the 2010 season with a perfect 8-0 doubles record with sophomore Amy Barton. Wilson was also honored with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2010. Junior Ashley Stockwell returns to help lead the Spartans offensively this season.

MSU has five sophomores on its roster that look to return to the courts this season. Sophomore Amy Barton is joined by fellow classmates Dana Guentert, Nicole Herzog, Michelle LeBlanc, and Michaela Silesova. The Green and White welcomes six freshmen that include Marina Bohrer, Olga Chernova, Emily LeBlanc, Katarina Lingl, Valentina Rusakova and Jennifer Yen.



Following the Spartan Invitational, Michigan State will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. for the Wolverine Invitational Oct. 1-3. MSU then heads to Evanston, Ill. for the Wildcat Invitational before concluding fall play with the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor Oct. 21-26. The Spartans open their spring season Jan. 23rd at home against IPFW.
