EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women’s tennis has announced its 2012-13 schedule today. The Spartans will host the annual Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational in October. This year, 14 of 23 spring dual matches and five of the Big Ten matches will be held in East Lansing. MSU will begin spring dual matches on Jan. 22.
“We are excited for this year as we are hoping to have everyone healthy and ready to go,” said head coach Simone Jardim. “If all goes according to plan, we should have a great season. I am looking forward for us to get this season started.”
The Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational will be hosted from Oct. 5-7 at the outdoor courts, unless inclement weather. Michigan State will welcome Akron, Ball State, Cleveland State, Dayton, Illinois-Chicago, IPFW, Marquette, Miami (Ohio), Purdue, Toledo, Wisconsin and Xavier.
Following the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational, selected Spartans will travel to Champaign, Ill. for the ITA Midwest Regional Championships from Oct. 18-23. Depending on results, some MSU athletes may attend ITA National Indoors.
This spring, the Spartans will play four non-conference in-state schools including Eastern Michigan as their season opener on Jan. 22. Following EMU, MSU will host Oakland, Jan. 25 and Detroit, Jan. 27. On Feb. 22, the women’s tennis team will travel to in-state rival Western Michigan.
The Spartans will travel midseason, March 15-17, to Montgomery, Ala. for the Blue-Gray Tournament, a highlight of the season.
The Green and White kicks off Big Ten play against rival Michigan on Feb. 27 in Ann Arbor. MSU will continue Big Ten play when it travels to Minnesota, March 22, and Wisconsin, March 24. The Spartans will return home to host Indiana, March 30, and Purdue, March 31. Michigan State will then head to Illinois to take on Northwestern, April 6, and Illinois, April 7. Iowa, Nebraska, and Ohio State travel to East Lansing for Big Ten matches April 13, 14, and 19 respectively. MSU will wrap up their regular season at Penn State on April 21.
Other opponents this season include Dayton who will travel to East Lansing Jan. 25. The Spartans will compete against Ball State on Jan. 27 in a home match. MSU will host Cleveland State and Toledo in a doubleheader on Feb. 2. Michigan State will take on Louisville at home on Feb. 10. Prior to heading out for a series of away games, MSU will have a match up against DePaul on Feb. 17. Michigan State will travel to Florida to face Florida Atlantic, March 6, and Florida International, March 7 prior to their Blue-Gray Tournament appearance.
Big Ten Championships will be held in Bloomington, Ind. home of the Hoosiers from April 25-28. A destination has not been decided for NCAA Regionals or Championships, they will take place May 13-15 and May 19-22 respectively.
