Women's Tennis Hosts Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team will kick off its fall season Oct. 5-7 with the 23rd annual Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational. The tournament will be held on campus at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts, depending on weather.
Teams competing in the tournament other than Michigan State are Akron, Ball State, Cleveland State, Dayton, Illinois-Chicago, IPFW, Marquette, Miami (Ohio), Purdue, Toledo, Wisconsin and Xavier.
Michigan State will have nine Spartans participating, four returners and three newcomers.
Spartans participating in the Draw A Singles as well as the Draw A Doubles are junior Marina Bohrer and sophomore Catherine Parenteau. Bohrer led the team in singles in the 2012 spring season with a dual record of 12-7. At the No. 2 position, Bohrer went 6-2 and 6-5 at third singles. Parenteau transferred to Michigan State this year, a previous student-athlete at the University of Arkansas.
Juniors Olga Chernova and Katarina Lingl will represent Michigan State in the Draw B Singles. Last spring, Chernova went 5-5 at the No. 2 position. Lingl led the team in singles tournament play in the fall of 2011 with a 6-7 record. In the spring, Lingl compiled an 11-12 record on both positions four and five.
Lingl will compete in the Draw A Doubles alongside sophomore Julianne Gruber. Gruber will also be participating in the Draw C Singles. As a freshman, Gruber began the fall single matches with three straight singles wins. She also tallied two wins at ITA Second Chance Tournament.
Freshman Emily Meyers and Senior Nicole Herzog will pair up for Draw B Doubles. Meyers will also compete in Draw D Singles and Herzog in Draw E Singles. Junior Jennifer Yen will join Herzog in Draw E Singles. Yen will also take part in Draw C Doubles alongside Christina Brown. Brown will represent Michigan State in Draw F Singles. This will be Brown's first tournament as a Spartan; last year she participated on the MSU club team.
The Spartans will continue tournament play at ITA Midwest Regional Championships beginning Oct. 18 in Champaign, Ill.
