Metcalf and Nguyen Travel to ITA All-Americans
The duo opens play on Thursday.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women’s tennis will be sending two representatives, juniors Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen, to the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women’s All-American Tournament this week.
Metcalf and Nguyen will be competing in the main draw of the ITA All-American Tournament, foregoing the pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds due to their impressive pre-season ranking.
The main draw will run from Thursday, Oct. 5 to Sunday, Oct. 8 at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California, which is in it’s 33rd consecutive year of hosting the tournament.
The duo of Metcalf and Nguyen are currently ranked No. 14 in the ITA Preseason National Doubles Rankings. Metcalf and Nguyen are the highest ranked Spartans doubles team in the ITA Preseason Rankings since Amy Barton and Marina Bohrer ranked No. 23 at the beginning of the 2011-12 season.
Bohrer was the last Spartan to appear in the ITA All-American tournament, after being selected for pre-qualifying singles in 2013.
Metcalf and Nguyen ended the 2016-17 season with an overall record of 14-5, and a team-high eight conference wins. The duo also posted a record of 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Twenty-four teams will be competing in the main draw of the tournament, including seven at-large and wild card selections, four teams from the qualifying tournament, automatic entry teams from the ITA National Summer Championship Champions, and one team per region for Regional Representation.
Players will be competing for a spot in the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, in addition to the All-American title.
The fall championships will take place from November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California.
