Spartans Set for ITA Midwest Regionals
Women's tennis travels to Ann Arbor Thursday.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women’s tennis team will take to the road this week to compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships. The tournament will run from Thursday, Oct. 12 to Tuesday, Oct. 17 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The qualifying round will begin on Thursday, Oct. 12, with the main draw doubles following on Friday, Oct. 13 and main draw singles on Saturday, Oct. 14.
Eight Spartans will represent MSU at the ITA Midwest Regionals, including senior Lexi Baylis and freshman Caroline Szabo in the qualifying round. Seniors Habiba Shaker and Aslina Chua, sophomore Samantha Memije, freshmen Ava Thielman and Sara Kuuttila, as well as juniors Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen will also represent the Green and White in the main draw.
“If we do what we’ve been doing I think we’re going to have some great results,” said head coach Kim Bruno. “It’s time for us to string up a couple good results, whether it be one of my freshmen or one of my experienced players.”
Several Spartans have had strong fall campaigns so far, with seniors Chua and Baylis earning two singles and two doubles victories each at the first fall tournament of the season.
At the Wildcat Invite, MSU was led by freshmen Thielman and Kuuttila who appeared in their first matches in the Green and White. Thielman won her flight and went 3-0 on the tournament while Kuuttila battled to a 2-1 record.
Shaker enters her first season as a Spartan and partnered with Kuuttila for a 2-1 mark at the Wildcat Invite. Memije also went 2-1 in doubles with Baylis and went 1-1 in singles play during the tournament.
Last week, the No. 14-ranked duo of Metcalf and Nguyen competed in the ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Added Bruno, “every time that we have an opportunity to compete, with Regionals being a marquee tournament of our fall season, how are we going to respond, what are we going to do now in order to put our best foot forward, win or lose?”
Baylis will start the tournament off for the Spartans in the singles qualifying round on Thursday as she takes on Valerie Riegraf of Western Michigan at 10 a.m. Szabo will also appear in the qualifying round against Michigan's Kara Hall.
