EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis competed in the first day of ITA Midwest Regional singles draws as well as learned its placements for doubles. Selected individuals chosen to appear at Second Chance Tournament have also learned their matchups for tomorrow in the first day of the tournament.
"We competed well, but came up short on a couple of the matches," said head coach Simone Jardim. "We have had lots to deal with in the last 24 hours, but have handled it pretty well."
In the ITA Midwest Regional day one, the Spartans struggled in their competitions. Julianne Gruber won in her first match of the day against Lauren Burich from Wisconsin, 6-3, 6-3. A few hours later, Gruber lost to Illinois State's Emmie Marx, 6-3, 6-0. Katarina Lingl lost in her matchup to Noelle Malley from Ohio State, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Spartan Olga Chernova lost to IPFW's Caterina Kiefer, 6-2, 6-2.
Tomorrow in doubles action, Gruber and Lingl will face Sephora Boulbahaim and Merritt Whitley from Eastern Illinois. While Marina Bohrer and Catherine Parenteau will play against Prang Pantusart and Angelina Jogasuria from Akron.
The Second Chance Tournament draws have been released and include two byes for MSU. In the Singles Alpha Draw, Michaela Silesova will compete against Karyn Emeralda from Cleveland State. Jennifer Yen and Emily Myers have byes in Singles Bravo and Singles Charlie Draws. In the Singles Delta Draw, senior Nicole Herzog will face Jessica Theobolot from Western Illinois. Spartans Herzog and Silesova will team up to face Kristin Kuer and Brittany Skemp of Milwaukee. In the Doubles Beta Draw, Yen and Meyers will take on Ese Davis and Morgan Woodfill.
