Spartans Wrap Up Fall Season at Louisville Tennis Classic

Nov. 2, 2017

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women’s tennis team concludes its fall season this weekend at the Louisville Tennis Classic in Louisville, Ky. Competition will take place from Friday, Nov. 3 to Sunday, Nov. 5 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

In addition to the Spartans and host Cardinals, participating schools include Ball State and West Virginia.

The teams will compete in a hidden-dual format, commencing with an opening doubles round on Friday at 10 a.m. The first two days of competition will begin with a doubles doubleheader, followed by singles matchups between No. 7 and No. 8 players, before concluding with a traditional team singles round.

“I’m just looking for progress. We had two really good weeks of practice, now just looking to put it into action a little bit,” head coach Kim Bruno said. “I’m just looking to end our fall campaign here strong. Not necessarily with results just forward progress and momentum heading into our spring season.”

Last time out, the Spartans were well-represented at the ITA Midwest Regionals with nine participants, composed of two players in the qualifying singles round, seven in main draw singles and four doubles teams.

The No. 14 doubles pair of juniors Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen received a first round bye in the tournament before securing two victories to advance to the quarterfinals of main draw doubles.

“We have a talented bunch of girls, there’s no question about that. If we take care of the little things and stay consistent in our process, we’re going to post results in the spring and that’s what we’ll look for. That’s just got to be what we do day in and day out,” Bruno said. “The girls have done a good job of that since our Regionals, we didn’t have the results we necessarily wanted, we just got back to work.”

MSU has also had impressive freshmen performances this fall in newcomers as Ava Thielman and Sara Kuuttila qualified for main draw singles of the ITA Midwest Regionals.

Results and updated brackets will be posted on msuspartans.com
