Position:
Head Coach

Experience:
Eighth year at MSU

In her eighth season as director of the women's track and field and cross country programs, Angela Goodman continues to guide the Spartans in the right direction, consistently improving the MSU program.

Last season, Goodman coached MSU to a sixth-place finish at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, and six individuals competed at the NCAA Mideast Regional in the outdoor season. MSU had three Big Ten champions, winning the indoor and outdoor pole vault and the indoor 400 meters. The Spartans excelled in the classroom as well, as Michelle Carson was named a second-team Academic All-American.

In 2004, Goodman directed MSU to a fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, which was the Spartans' highest finish since 1992. In addition, three Spartans competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Jamie Krzyminski garnered All-America accolades in both the 5,000 meters (indoor) and 10,000 meters (outdoor), while Sherita Williams was an All-American in the triple jump. Krzyminski was a three-time All-American in the 10,000 meters during her career and Williams was an All-American in the same event in 2002.

Under Goodman, Spartan athletes have earned All-America honors on nine occasions and have been crowned Big Ten champions 12 times. In 2002, MSU featured four outdoor All-Americans, the most in a Spartan outdoor season since 1984. Michigan State has had a Big Ten Champion for five straight years at the conference indoor championships and for four consecutive seasons at the outdoor championships.

"Our program has experienced a tremendous amount of growth over the past few years, having produced several All-Americans and Big Ten Champions," said Goodman. "We have assembled a great staff whose main objective is to continue moving Spartan Track and Field into a top-three program in the Big Ten. The current student-athletes are doing an incredible job of working hard toward achieving that goal. We are recruiting student-athletes that have excelled at the high school level, and who we expect can make an impact at the collegiate level."

Having competed and coached at the Big Ten level, Coach Goodman brings a different perspective to her student-athletes.

The Fort Wayne, Ind., native has a wealth of international coaching experience. Goodman served as an assistant coach for the 2001 World University Games in Beijing, China, and with U.S. National Team at the 1997 World Outdoor Championship in Athens, Greece. In 1995, she was the Deputy Commissioner of Competition for Athletics at the Special Olympic World Games. She was also the manager of the 1994 U.S. Olympic Festival Track and Field Championships. Goodman holds USATF Level II Certification in sprints, hurdles and jumps.

Goodman, who is in her 14th year of coaching overall, earned the USTCA Region I Outdoor Coach of the Year award in 1997 and the Indoor Coach of the Year award in 1998 while at the University of Connecticut.

Goodman began her coaching career in 1992 as men's and women's track and field assistant coach at Yale. After three years with the Bulldogs, she served as a graduate assistant coach at Syracuse in August of 1995 before leaving to take the head position at UConn in February of 1996.

Goodman, who was a star member of the Purdue track team, earned All-America honors in the triple jump (indoor) as a senior in 1988. She was a four-time Big Ten champion, winning two indoor titles and two outdoor championships in the triple jump (1987-88), and is the former Big Ten record-holder in that event. She also ran a leg on the 4x400 relay team that captured the 1988 Big Ten Indoor Championship and was a member of the 1987 Big Ten Outdoor Championship team. In 1994, Goodman was inducted into the Purdue Women's Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Goodman competed at the national level after graduating from Purdue in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in child development and family studies. She placed second in the triple jump at the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials. That same year she earned TAC All-America honors with a third-place finish at the TAC National Championships.
