AMES, Iowa - The Michigan State men's and women's track and field teams finished day one of the 14th annual Iowa State Classic on Friday, Feb. 13 in Ames, Iowa. The competition was held at Lied Recreation Center with seniors Michelle Carson, Sarah Pepera and Steve Sherer leading the way for the Spartans.

On the women's side, Carson placed third overall in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:57.23, while Pepera finished fourth overall (17:00.08) in the field of 57.

Also for the women, freshman Cynetheia Rooks placed fifth overall out of 80 runners in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24:28, senior Sarah Adelaine was sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 58-8 1/2 and senior Sherita Williams placed eighth in the long jump with a leap of 19-2 1/2.

On the men's side, 2003 All-American Steve Sherer provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 5000-meter run with a season-best time of 14:02.98, which placed him fifth out of 68 runners. Also for the Spartans, sophomore Carlos Alexander placed eighth out of 84 competitors in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.81.

The Spartans will continue at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday, Feb. 14 in the second day of competition, which is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
