RALEIGH, N.C. - The Michigan State women's track and field team opened the 2004 outdoor season Friday at the Adidas Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State. Senior Sarah Adelaine and freshman Cynetheia Rooks were the Spartans' top performers of the opening day, as Adeliane placed third in the shot put and fourth in the discus, while Rooks took third in the 400-meter dash.

Adelaine threw the shot put an even 50-0 to take third place for the Spartans, while freshman Michelle Rossio placed 17th with a toss of 42-8 1/4. Adealine's best discus throw was a heave of 156-7, which was good for fourth place.

Meanwhile, Rooks made her collegiate outdoor debut a memorable one, racing to a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.83. In a field of 123 finishers over 15 heats, Rooks finished behind only two unattached runners - Suziann Reid (52.09) and Debbie Dunn (52.49) of Sprint Capital. Also in the 400, MSU sophomore Shannon Radermacher placed 38th (57.69) and freshman Marquita Allen placed 43rd (58.12).
 

 

In the long jump, senior Sherita Williams tied for 19th with a jump of 18-4 1/2, and sophomore Taren James finished placed 23rd with a leap of 18-3. MSU also competed in the 1600-meter Sprint Medley Relay, finishing eighth of 27 teams in a time of 4:00.25.

In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Katie Kelly placed finished 23rd with a time of 17:05.38, followed by senior Cindy Durocher (37th, 17:22.35) and junior Katie Anderson (45th, 17:31.09).

The Spartans will continue competition at the Raleigh Relays Saturday.
