April 15, 2005
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Michigan State women's track and field team competed Friday at the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee. A pair of regional qualifying marks highlighted the day's competition for Michigan State, which had six top-ten performances Friday.
Sophomore Cynetheia Rooks did not have a top ten finish, but her 400-meter time of 54.59 was good enough to finish 11th against a strong field and meet the NCAA regional qualifying standard. The other regional qualifying mark belonged to senior Mickie Rzepka, whose 12-5 1/2 mark in the pole vault was good for a tie for seventh, but just shy of her school record of 12-8 set last weekend.
The top finish of the day in terms of placing was by sophomore Melinda Buckmaster, who placed third in the javelin with a throw of 142-7. In the hammer throw, sophomore Erica Bailey placed fourth with a distance of 159-4, while junior Michelle Rossio was just behind, finishing ninth with a toss of 153-9.
Junior Taren James placed sixth in the triple jump for MSU, leaping 39-10, while Rossio also had a top ten finish in the discus, placing 10th with a mark of 141-11.
Also competing for MSU was freshman Jackie Walton, who placed 24th in the 100-meter hurdles (14.58) and 32nd in the 400 hurdles (1:04.89).
Action concludes at the Sea Ray Relays Saturday.
