Scouting the Spartans
Cynetheia Rooks has the top time in the league in the 200-meter dash this year, with a mark of 23.68 set last weekend at the Len Paddock Invitational. Rooks is also seeded third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.83.
Mickie Rzepka is on top of the pole vault list with a mark of 12-8. Rzepka went over 13 feet three times during the indoor season and won the pole vault this year at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
A pair of distance runners are seeded second in their events. In the 10,000-meter run, Michelle Rafferty is second with a top time of 34:34, while Michelle Carson is ranked second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:22.92. Rafferty is also seeded sixth in the 5,000 (16:46).
Taren James is highly ranked in two events, owning the fourth-best mark in the triple jump (12.48m) and the seventh-best effort in the long jump (5.82m). Melinda Buckmaster is seeded fifth in the javelin with a mark of 46.16m.
Last Year at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships
Jamie Krzyminski was a double winner for MSU, winning the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races. Sarah Adelaine placed second in the hammer throw, fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put. Rooks was second in the 400 and fourth in the 200, while Sherita Williams finished third in both the triple jump and long jump.
Big Ten Outdoor Championship History
Michigan State has had 26 Big Ten outdoor titles in individual events. Twenty-one of those 26 titles have been won by individuals on the track, four have come from relay races, and just one came from an individual in a field event.
