Freshman Holly Toliver turned in her second straight double-digit kill performance, tying Allyssah Fitterer with 10 for the match as Michigan State defeated UAB, 3-0, in the second game of the UAB/Samford Invitational. MSU is now 2-0, and will play Jacksonville State and Samford on Saturday to conclude the tournament.
Michigan State opened its 2014 season on Friday afternoon, downing Southeastern Louisiana 3-0 at the UAB/Samford Invitational. MSU owns a 9-2 record in openers under current head coach Cathy George, and the Spartans have started off the season with a win in each of the last six seasons; MSU has also won the last five openers by 3-0 margins.
Playing seven volleyball matches in 10 days would be demanding for any athlete. Doing it while touring another country made it all the more difficult, but Kori Moster wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
No. 16 Michigan State kicks off the 2014 season at the UAB/Samford Invitational, a five-team tournament which will provide each squad with four games. This will be the first meeting all-time between MSU and each of its four opponents this weekend.
Fourteen Michigan State regular-season volleyball games are on the schedule to air across television platforms this coming fall. With four broadcasts on the Big Ten Network, one on the Pac-12 Networks, and nine more are scheduled to air on the digital platform BTN Plus (formerly the Big Ten Digital Network, a subscription-based platform).
