Final Stats

LOS ANGELES - The Michigan State volleyball team (0-1) dropped its first season opener since the 1996 season, falling to No. 6 Southern California, 3-0, on Friday night at the Galen Center in its first match of the Trojan Invitational. USC won by scores of 30-24, 30-23 and 30-25.

Ashley Schatzle began her senior campaign leading the Spartans with her first double-double of the season, posting 15 kills and 16 digs, one dig shy of her career high.

Freshman setter Lauren O'Reilly made her collegiate premier with 33 assists.

Game one proved to be a battle at the service line for both programs, although State failed to capitalize on seven Trojan service errors. The teams traded points early before USC took a five point lead at 20-15 and never relented. Despite the 30-24 loss, MSU tallied 17 kills against just nine by the USC offense.

Southern California went on a quick roll in game two, scoring the first seven points. Sparked by senior Katie Johnson's smart play at the net, MSU settled down and tied the game at 19-19, forcing the Trojans to use their first timeout of the set. USC regrouped and made use of its home court advantage, as the Spartans managed to tally only four points the remainder of the game, retiring 24-30 in the USC victory.

Game three proved to be the Spartans strongest effort of the evening, as the Green and White fought hard before dropping the decisive match 30-25. MSU jumped to an impressive 9-5 lead before USC went on a four-point run to tie the game. The Trojans then took 12 of 17 points for a 17-14 lead. But the Spartans weren't done fighting and stole three points back to retie the set. Unfortunately, it didn't take long for USC to regain control, claiming six-straight points and eventually owning the game 30-25.
