Spartans Cruise in 3-0 Win Over St. Francis
Aug 30, 2013
Blacksburg, Va. - Michigan State opened the 2013 season with a 3-0 win over St. Francis on Friday morning at the Hokie Invitational at Virginia Tech. The Spartans opened up wide margins in each of the first two sets, then battled point-for-point with the Flash in the third set before finishing it off (25-8, 25-8, 25-21).
The Spartans just narrowly missed a school record for fewest points allowed an opponent, limiting the Flash to just 37 points in the three-set match, two shy of the record of 35 MSU set last season against Dartmouth. The 37 points allowed is the second-fewest allowed to an opponent in program history.
MSU got 13 players floor time in the match. Alexis Mathews led the Spartans with 11 kills, five blocks, hitting .625 for the match. Classmate Lauren Wicinski had six kills, five blocks, and four digs in the first two sets, while Kristen Kelsay had 21 assists and seven digs. Junior Jazmine White had three service aces to go with her four kills and three blocks.
The Green & White dominated the opening set, hitting .600 as a team. Kelsay had nine of her 21 assists in the opening set, while the team dished out five service aces, with two from White. The second set, the Spartans hit .381, allowing just eight points again to the Flash. Head coach Cathy George used her bench liberally in the third set, keeping seniors Lauren Wicinski and Kelsey Kuipers on the bench in favor of some younger players. Freshman Allyssah Fitterer had two kills and three blocks in the final set.
MSU has a slight break on Friday afternoon before returning to the court at 5 p.m. for a match against Towson. MSU will play two matches on Saturday, against Pacific and host Virginia Tech.
