Indianapolis, Ind. - Michigan State improved to 6-1 overall with a 3-0 sweep of IPFW (6-3) to open the Butler Invitational on Friday afternoon. Paced by a double-double by Taylor Galloway and 15 kills from Lauren Wicinski, the Spartans won their fourth straight match.
The Spartans limited chances for the Mastadons throughout the opening two sets, allowing IPFW consecutive points on just three occasions. Wicinski had seven kills in the opening set alone, while Galloway had four kills and four digs. In the second set, Wicinski had three digs to go with five kills, opening up more of the floor for Galloway, who had five kills and five digs in that second set. The Spartans had four blocks in the second set as well, two from senior Alexis Mathews.
In the final set, it was more of a balanced attack from MSU, as six players recorded a kill, led by Wicinski's three and two from Galloway, Mathews, and Ebony Scott. Mathews and Jazmine White each had two blocks in the third set. Meanwhile, Galloway had five more digs to give her a match total of 14, one shy of her career best. Her 11 kills was one short of her season-best of 12, recorded last Friday against Oregon.
MSU limited the Mastadons to a .035 hitting percentage in the match, and limited IPFW's top hitter Emily Spencer to just six kills.
Wicinski's 15 kills brought her closer in her quest for 2,000. She now needs just 40 kills to reach that milestone.
The Spartans will play twice on Saturday - they take on Illinois state at 11 a.m., then tangle with host Butler in the tournament finale at 7 p.m.
