Garvelink Helps Spartans To Second-Place Finish at Shamrock Invitational
MSU sweeps Southern Illinois to complete Notre Dame tournament
Michigan State wrapped up the Shamrock Invitational with a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-22, 25-20) of Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon in South Bend. MSU will enter Conference play next week with a 7-2 overall record.
The Spartans were led Alyssa Garvelink, who had 13 kills, hit .417, and added seven blocks (one solo). Brooke Kranda also turned in double-digit kills with 11, and added three digs and four blocks. MSU also got a double-double from Rachel Minarick (27 assists, 16 digs) and a career-best 24 digs from freshman Jamye Cox.
Garvelink was named to the All-Tournament Team, averaging 2.89 kills and 1.89 blocks on the three-game tournament, hitting .339. Holly Toliver joined her with All-Tournament Team kudos, averaging 3.56 kills, 1.33 digs, and 0.56 blocks per set while hitting .388.
The Salukis were scrappy and pushed MSU in each set, but the Spartans remained poised and did not allow SIU to gain any momentum in any of the three sets. The Spartans were able to once again utilize 11 players in the match, and also distibuted its scoring throughout the lineup - in addition to Kranda and Garvelink, Toliver had eight kills, hit .444 without a hitting error, and contributed three blocks. Autumn Bailey had eight kills and 12 digs, while Meredith Norris had six kills and six digs.
MSU out-blocked their opponent 11.5-5.0, and held a .241 hitting percentage to MSU for .141 for the Salukis.
MSU opens Big Ten play next weekend on the road. The Spartans take on No. 5 Wisconsin on Friday evening, and then tangle with No. 1 Minnesota on Sunday in a match that will air live on ESPN.
"I thought we handled our business today in a much better way- we cleaned up a lot of the things we talked about after Friday night's match. However, we know that its a never-ending quest - we need to get better every day. The work doesn't end because our pre-conference schedule is over - we're now facing the gauntlet of Big Ten play and the commitment to improvement only increases. We're looking forward to starting Conference action next weekend - and we've got a tall task with top-five teams both nights."
