Volleyball Falls to Ohio State, 3-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State volleyball team (9-6, 1-3) concluded its first Big Ten road trip with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-18) loss to Ohio State (14-3, 2-2) on Saturday, Oct. 2 in St. John Arena. Leading the Spartans statistically was junior Natalie Emro (Wildwood, Mo.) who led the team in assists (22), digs (seven) and tied in total blocks (two).
The Spartans opened the match trailing 3-1 to Ohio State. The Green and White responded with a 4-2 run to tie the set up at five each. Following the first tie of the set, MSU went on a 5-1 run to take a 10-6 lead on the Buckeyes. Michigan State's lead reached six with the score 14-8. OSU responded with a 5-0 run to pull within one at 14-13. The Spartans, however, regained their two point lead at 16-14 before Ohio State got two straight to tie it at 16. OSU would go on and win the first set, 25-20. Red-shirt freshman Alexis Mathews (Detroit, Mich.) led MSU in the first set with three kills. Emro recorded eight assists in the set for a team best total.
The second set opened with MSU getting out to a 3-1 lead on the Buckeyes. After being tied four different times in the early portion of the set, the Green and White regained a lead at 10-8, before once again being tied at 10. OSU responded by getting out front by eight at 21-13. MSU pulled back within one after a 9-2 run, making the set 23-22. The Buckeyes took the final two points to win the set, 25-22. Junior Becca Zlabis (Wheaton, Ill.) was the top attacker for the Green and White with four kills. Emro once again tallied eight assists in the set.
Following the intermission, the Green and White once again trailled the Buckeyes early in the set, 3-1. The Spartans managed to pull within one point with the score, 5-4. The Buckeyes would respond with a 7-1 run to gain a 12-5 lead over MSU. Michigan State dug deep as it got back within four on two occasions,17-13 and 21-17, before finally closing out the match at 25-18. Junior Kyndra Abron (Livonia, Mich.) was tops on the team with three kills in the set.
Senior Megan Schatzle (Monroe, Mich.) led the team in kills with seven. Mathews joined Emro with two blocks on the night.
MSU returns to action next weekend when they host No. 7 Illinois on Friday, Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Saturday, Oct. 9 match against Wisconsin at 7 p.m.
