Indiana jumped out to an early lead, and led by as many as seven points in the opening set, both early (8-1) and late (20-13). The Hoosiers accomplished this with hot hitting (.429, with just two errors and 14 kills) and scrappy play, recording 11 digs. MSU had three service errors in the opening set, and hit .226 (12-5-31) . Haverly had six kills and a block for the visitors in the opening set, while Wicinski and Reinig led the Spartans with four each.

MSU evened the match with a second-set victory. The Spartans built to a nine-point lead (20-11), but despite the Hoosiers' best efforts, the MSU seniors scored seven of MSU's final eight points. Mathews had two blocks and four kills to lead the Spartans in the set, while Kelsey Kuipers and Wicinski each had three kills. Haverly had four kills for the Hoosiers, while Caitlin Hansen matched her opening-set total with six digs.

A 5-2 run for Indiana blew open a tight set early in the third, giving the Hoosiers a 15-11 lead. The Spartans tied it up at 20-20, but the Hoosiers used a 5-0 run to close out the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Both Haverly and Leach turned in five kills in the set, pacing the Hoosiers.

The fourth set began with small runs for each team - a 5-2 lead by the Spartans was turned into a 6-5 lead for the Hoosiers, greatly aided by three straight MSU errors. With the set tied at eight, the teams battled point-for-point, with a three-point rally on each side. With MSU trailing by one (18-19), the Spartans called timeout, and came back to score six straight points to get to set point, with kills coming from Wicinski and Galloway and Reinig and Mathews combining on a block. The Hoosiers battled back to score the next two points, but Wicinski set up Mathews for her 10th kill of the night to take the set and force a fifth, just the fourth time this season that the Spartans were playing a fifth set.

With MSU leading 7-6 in the fifth set, Indiana used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 10-7, using a pair of Spartan errors and a pair of Amelia Anderson kills. The home team used a 3-0 run of its own to tie the match at 10, but saw the Hoosiers close out their first Big Ten victory with a 5-2 run over the balance of the set, with Leach getting three of her 15 kills in that final run.

The Spartans close out a four-game homestand when they welcome Ohio State (Friday, 6:30 p.m.) and Penn State (Saturday, 8:30 p.m.) to Jenison Field House next weekend.
