MSU Volleyball Defeats Northwestern in Halloween Thriller
EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 25 Michigan State defeated Northwestern on Friday night in Jenison Field House, 17-15, 15-7, 8-15, 13-15, 16-14.
Northwestern came out of the gates fast, going up 7-0 in game one before MSU scored 13 straight points to go up 14-7. Northwestern then went on a run of eight consecutive points to go up 15-14. MSU came back to tie the game and then Jenna Wrobel hit two big kills to end it. State won game two in a decisive fashion, 15-7, while Northwestern did the same to MSU in game three, 15-8. In game four, the Spartans found themselves down 7-14, but managed another comeback to 13-14 before the Wildcats closed them out. Game five saw the teams ride the see saw to six ties. At 14-14, Wrobel hit a big kill to put MSU up 15-14 and then had the assist to Tammy Vonderheide to close out the match.
Morales hit a match-high 22 kills with 15 digs. Jenna Wrobel had 21 kills, 13 digs and seven blocks for MSU. Lindsey Clayton also had a fine match with 11 kills, seven digs and eight blocks. Four Northwestern players hit double-figure kills, including 18 by Melissa Doan who also had 18 digs.
Michigan State moves to 17-7 overall, 7-4 in the Big Ten. State is in action again Sunday in Jenison Field House versus archrival Michigan in Jam Jenison III.
