Sixth-Ranked Spartans Cruise Past Xavier

The sixth-ranked Michigan State volleyball team easily defeated Xavier, 15-1, 15-9, 15-4, in the second round of the Goff/MSU Volleyball Classic. The victory sets up a showdown with No. 15 Southern California for the championship of the tournament tonight at 8 p.m.

Head coach Chuck Erbe opted to rest his starters in the match with the Musketeers and the Spartan bench came through in flying colors.

Freshman Christie Landry paced the Spartans by hitting .526 with 11 kills and just one error in 19 attempts. She also contributed five digs. Sophomore Tammy Vonderheide, who normally only sees action in the back row, took advantage of her first start of the season at outside hitter, contributing eight kills, five digs and two aces.

Rookie Sarah Gustin also showed why she was a Volleyball Fab 50 selection, putting down six kills in 11 attempts and contributing a match-high six blocks (3 BS/3BA).

The Spartans, who hit .354 as a team, extended their home winning streak to 14 matches dating back to last season.
