Volleyball Falls to Wisconsin in Big Ten Opener

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State University volleyball team opened its Big Ten season with a disappointing loss to the 11th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, 15-10, 4-15, 17-19, 3-15, in Jenison Field House on Friday night.

Junior Jenna Wrobel led the Spartans with 20 kills, 11 digs and five blocks. Senior Veronica Morales set Michigan State's all-time kills mark with 1,682 career kills.

The loss brought an end to a 20-game home Big Ten match winning streak. The Spartans last lost a conference match on Nov. 26, 1994, to Wisconsin.

MSU looked strong in game one, winning 15-10, but Wisconsin was the dominating team in game two, easily winning 15-4. Game three proved to be the match-winner for the Badgers, even though the match went four. Down 10-1, Michigan State put together a 14-4 run to go up on Wisconsin 15-14. The Badgers came back to tie and go ahead 16-15. Jenny Whitehead held serve as MSU tied it up at 16 and went ahead by one point. The Badgers came back with three straight points to seal the game. Game four proved anticlimatic as the Spartans ran out of energy, losing 3-15.

Michigan State moves to 10-4 on the season, 0-1 in conference play. The team faces No. 25 Illinois at 5 p.m. on Sunday in Jenison Field House. The match will be aired on television by SportsChannel/Chicago.
