Volleyball Defeats No. 25 Illinois
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 15th-ranked Michigan State volleyball team defeated No. 25 Illinois 15-5, 13-15, 15-13, 15-12 in front of 1,053 fans on Sunday evening in Jenison Field House.
Michigan State came out strong in game one, winning 15-10. Illinois showed its resilience in game two, coming back from a 3-9 deficit to win 15-13. After see-saw battle in game three, MSU came back to win by the same score, 15-13. Illinois continued the battle of side-outs, tying the score nearly every other point. Michigan State pulled out the victory 15-12.
Service errors hindered MSU all night. The Spartans had 15 of them. Illinois was not much better with 12. Strong blocking kept the Illinois guns in check. MSU had 18 total blocks to the Illini's seven.
Four players hit double figures in kills for the Spartans. Jenna Wrobel had 22 kills, Veronica Morales 21, Lindsey Clayton had a career-high 17 and Christie Landry totaled 14. Freshman Sarah Gustin tied the all-time mark for blocks in a match with 12 (2-10), also a career high. She also set career bests in digs, assists, kills and attempts. Freshman setter Vicki Basil tallied a career high 66 assists to aid in the victory.
Michigan State is now 11-4 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten Conference play. The Spartans travel to Ann Arbor to face Michigan on Fri., Oct. 3 and then travel to Evanston, Ill. to play Northwestern on Oct. 5.
